Stillbirth

Stillbirth happens when a baby dies in the uterus after reaching a size when it theoretically could survive outside the uterus – 20 weeks gestational age is the usual cutoff. Many stillbirths happen for unknown reasons, but sometimes, particularly in a full-term baby, medical malpractice can be an issue that parents may want to investigate.

Whatever the cause, stillbirth is always a deeply tragic event that turns a time of joy into grief.

Possible causes of stillbirth include:

  • Mismanagement of prenatal care
  • Mismanaged labor
  • Failure to diagnose risk factors such as an overweight mother or fetus
  • Failure to recognize and take action when decreased fetal movement is observed or there are signs the unborn baby is not developing properly
  • Placental complications
  • Umbilical cord prolapse
  • Infection of the lining of the uterus
