Ophthalmic Negligence Attorneys

Ophthalmologists are medical doctors, MD’s, with specialty training in eye diseases, including eye surgery. Many ophthalmologists sub-specialize in the various parts of the eye. Some only operate on the retina (the viewing screen at the back of the eye), including surgery for diabetic retinopathy. Others focus on the cornea (including LASIK surgeons), or cataract treatment of the lens, or eyelid surgery. Or they may focus on particular diseases such as glaucoma.

Medical malpractice in lost vision cases often occurs not because of fault by the ophthalmologist, but from failure of a primary care doctor to refer the patient to the ophthalmologist in time for curative surgery or medication. Common malpractice issues of failure to diagnose include diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and retinal detachment. See our specific pages on those.

Improper performance of eye surgery also can give rise to a malpractice claim. This happens occasionally with cataract surgery, glaucoma treatment (including failure to use more advanced techniques to open up the drainage channels in the eye), and LASIK surgery. LASIK malpractice cases often involve the eye doctor offering the surgery to someone who really should not have received it, because of some issue with their eye such as thin corneas.
